Albarino

Put simply, this stuff is just the right level of fancy - an elegant wine with a reasonable price tag. Albarino is known for the high quality, elegant light-bodied wines it produces in Spain and Portugal. It is best known for its domination of Spain’s Rias Baixas appellation, where it constitutes 90% of the vines grown there. Albarino is now also making an appearance in California’s cooler areas, as well as New Zealand too.

What am I getting?
A little ballerina esque, Albarino wines are delicate and pretty. Typically these wines have a wonderful combination of citrus and floral notes, so you’ll be treated to lemons, grapefruits, pears, honeysuckle and sometimes a little orange zest and beeswax. The super-high acidity will seriously kick your pallet into action, and you’ll enjoy a wonderfully long finish i.e. you’ll be able to taste the wine for a long time after you’ve swallowed your sip!

What can I drink it with?
Because Albarinos often have a tendency to have a slightly bitter aftertaste, some people really love drinking them as an aperitif before eating. However, when pairing it with food you’ve got a lot to play with thanks to the wine’s high levels of acidity. White meats and dishes with citrusy sauces would be a match made in heaven, equally sushi and fresh Thai dishes would fit the bill too.

I want it!
