Breede River Valley

Main grapes: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Shiraz

Sub-regions: Worcester, Robertson, Breedekloof

Climate: The steep slopes and altitude create a microclimate within this region, providing cooling influences during the hot, dry summers and making the winters considerably colder than those enjoyed by other South African wine regions.

You should know... Bulk production wines are planted along the valley floor here, while the premium wines are generally made from vineyards situation in the foothills of the mountains that surround the valley. Breede River Valley produces around 40% of South Africa’s total wine output, and wineries here range from small boutique operations, usually in Robertson, to enormous co-operatives, often in Worcester.
