Franken
Main grapes: It’s not exactly a list of your average go-to grapes but even so…Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Bacchus, Riesling and Kerner.
Sub-regions: Würzburg, Mainviereck
Climate: Put simply: continental. Warm, dry summers and some seriously chilly winters.
You should know... Franken doesn’t really do much in the way of making a consumer’s life easy. Not only does it have two names – ‘Franconia’ seems to be the English adaptation – but producers of this region also bottle their wines in Bocksbeutel. Imagine your average wine bottle had been sat on (by something exceedingly large – an elephant would probably do), and promptly flattened and you have a standard Bocksbeutel. Good luck to anyone who tries to fit one of these little gems in a wine rack; the phrase square peg in a round hole comes to mind.
