Rheinhessen

Main grapes: Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder as well as bits and pieces of Silvaner, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Portugieser and Kerner

Sub-regions:  Mainz, Worms, Alzey, Bingen

Climate: Surrounded by a protective fortress comprised of hills and forests, Rheinessen is sheltered from cold winds and consequently has a pretty mild climate.

You should know... Rheinessen is undoubtedly Germany’s biggest wine region, which in the past was known for its production of bulk wine. However, there is now an increasing large production of quality-focused wines being produced in the area – so they’re clearly moving on to bigger, brighter, (and most importantly) more drinkable things. The best of the vineyards here line the steep west bank of the Rhine river; an area known as Rheinterrasse – literally translated as 'Rhine Terrace', so points for creativity(?!).
