Riverina
Main grapes: Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz, Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Sirah
Climate: Flat plains and high temperatures characterize Riverina, as is the case for much of Australia. However, what sets Riverina apart from the rest of the country is her plentiful water supply. The Lachlan and Murrumbidgee rivers flow from east to west across the region, playing an essential role in both the viability and success of the region’s agriculture and viticulture…so evidently Riverina’s name is no coincidence given it’s complete and totally dependence on these bodies of water.
You should know… Not to make the Swiss feel irrelevant, but this Australian wine region is the same size as their country…awks. Bulk production of wine is the name of the game here, Riverina claiming a huge 15% of Australia’s entire production of Shiraz. Just behind Shiraz, Semillon is the second most planted varietal in the region, producing wines that are growing increasingly popular every year.
