Salta

Main grapes: Torrontés, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat

Sub-regions: Calchaquí Valley, Cafayate

Climate: Salta’s altitude is its saving grace, since it helps to moderate the blistering heat typical of Northern Argentina, and enables temperatures to drop even more at night. While in the day temperatures can reach a toasty 38°C, even at the lofty heights of 1000+ meters above sea level, there is a significant drop to around 12°C during the night.

You should know... Home to some of the highest vineyards in the world, Salta is the ultimate destination if you fancy a trip with some breath-taking views and delicious wine – and who wouldn’t want to get involved with a killer combo like that?! The history of wine in Salta is equally impressive, dating back to 1550 when Jesuit missionaries first planted grape seeds from Peru. Salta can also claim a World Record in the form of El Arenal, which at 3,111m above sea level is the highest vineyard in the world. The real stars of the show, however, are the Torrontés wines that are made here. Torrontés takes ‘aromatic’to a whole new level, and is packed full of floral and peachy aromas.
