Shacheng District
Main grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Marlesan
Climate: In spite of being relatively close to the Bohai Sea, Shacheng has a pretty continental climate. Summers are hot and humid while the winters that follow are cold and dry – often subject to the freezing Siberian winds. This region is also affected by the East Asian Monsoon, a weather system that brings cool, moist air from the Pacific and Indian Ocean, then proceeding to drop it when it collides with the warmer air of the continent.
You should know… Shacheng is a town in the province of Hebei – also home to the country’s capital city Beijing. Viticulture here is split into 2 regions; hilly Huailai which sits north-west of Beijing, as well as the coastal city of Changli further north. Huailai actually sits in the shadow of the Great Wall of China and several of China’s largest producers are situated here – one being Greatwall, one of the country’s most prolific wineries and the official wine of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
