Southern Oregon

Main grapes: Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Riesling, Chardonnay

Sub-regions: Umpqua, Elkton, Applegate and Jacksonville, Rogue

Climate: Though Southern Oregon is the warmest of Oregon’s wine region, it still has a few cool micro-climates knocking around due to the varying landscape of hills and valleys. This area receives significantly less rainfall than its neighbors (40% than the Willamette Valley) and is generally a warm, sunny, arid climate.

You should know... South Oregon is the oldest of the wine regions in Oregon, however it was hit very hard in the prohibition period and it wasn’t until the 1970s that viticulture really got going again – it was only in 2004 that the region was recognized officially as an appellation.
