There are roughly 6,500 languages spoken worldwide. However, when calculating I highly doubt they thought to include one of the most complicated I know: the Language of Wine – or LOW as it shall be referred to from here on out. Yet, in spite of the fact that the vast majority of the population is more than a little well acquainted with the beverage, they are in equal measure completely and utterly baffled by the language that surrounds it. And frankly, who can blame them? The adjectives used by critics sound as though they’re from another planet, never mind another language: I sight ‘mercaptan’ as an example…who knew ‘stinks like rotten egg’ could sound so fancy.

No doubt, you have all heard ‘it does what it says on the tin’. Well, I think it’s high time we upgrade this worn out old tin to a bottle, and Vino and Veritas will do exactly that. Wine simplified…or even endeavouring to simplify wine. It would make sense if the process of said simplification was simple (clue’s in the name), but I fear that won’t be the case. Nevertheless, something so loved by so many surely at least merits understanding beyond that of colour recognition. The sense of sight is admittedly wonderful, but seeing as you have five of them you might as well use another two: Taste and Smell, welcome to the table.

With the premise of the blog out the way, I think it would probably make sense to now introduce myself – After 21 years I’ve realised that introductions are both a little tedious and lot repetitive so I promise I’ll keep it brief. My name is Pumbaa Goess-Saurau (now you understand why I hate introductions). I am about to start my third year of studying Modern Languages (French and Italian) at the University of Bristol – but, and here’s the plot twist – I won’t actually be doing this studying in Bristol. The third year of this course is to be spent abroad either working or studying.

Enter Wine. From September onwards I will be working in the wine industry. Firstly in France, with a wine merchant in Bordeaux, and then in Italy gaining some more hands-on experience in vineyards. Of course, wine is a passion of mine - the blog might be a giveaway. Unfortunately passion does not equate to knowledge and, though not entirely clueless about the industry, I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Through V&V I’ll share my bafflements as I try to wrap my head around a new world and a new language (as if French and Italian weren’t enough already). The LOW and I are going to be getting up close and personal and I can't wait...I better get my vocab book out!

Happy reading and happy drinking,
P x
