Baden
Main grapes: Spätburgunder (the German name for Pinot Noir), Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Gutedel and Riesling
Sub-regions: Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Freiburg
Climate: Warm, warm, warm with a healthy dose of sunshine – the dream for any Englishman really. This warmth is uncharacteristic of German wine regions, which means grapes grown in Baden tend to develop different qualities to your stereotypical German wines.
You should know... The third largest wine region in Germany, Baden has a huge variation of soil types and so is also home to an incredible range of grape varieties too. The diversity of this region is pronounced that they actually decided to divide it into 9 sub-regions to make distinguishing wines a little easier…I’m not entirely sure they succeeded seeing as finding a stereotypical description of Baden wine is practically impossible, but I suppose it’s the effort that counts.
