Hawke’s Bay

Main grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (Bordeaux Blend common), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Syrah, Pinot Noir

Sub-regions: Bay View, Esk River Valley area, Te Awanga, Te Meta Peak, Maraekakaho, Korokipo, Taradale, Meanee, Bridge Pa, Gimblett Gravels and Ohiti

Climate: A temperate climate and sunshine (quite literally) for days mean that Hawke’s Bay is a wine producer’s dream. The costal influences help to moderate the heat, which also lengthens the growing season. However, though the surrounding hilly terrain offers protection against harsh winter winds, frost can still cause problems in here.

You should know... Dating back to 1851, Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s second largest wine region. The vineyards are situated along the paths of 5 major rivers that spiral inwards toward the central North Island. These rivers influence the style of the wines produced here, because they effect how the grapes are grown, particularly since they also affect the region’s terrain which varies from steep slopes to gravelly river terraces.
