Lower Austria (Niederösterreich)
Main grapes: Grüner Veltiner, Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Blaufränkisch
Sub-regions: Kamptal, Kremstal, Wachau, Wagram, and Weinviertel.
Climate: Totally landlocked, Niederösterreich enjoys a deeply continental climate, so think snowy winters and sunny summers – which the indigenous grapes here are very well suited to. The Danube river also plays its part in this region, providing a cooling influence and a little humidity in the summer.
You should know... The largest of the 3 regions, Niederösterreich is home to about 60% of Austria’s vineyards. Weinviertel, one of the sub-regions here, is on the same latitude as Champagne and it also produces a sparkling wine in the form of Sekt. However, the what Niederösterreich is really known for is it’s peppery, fresh Grüner Veltliners, as well as some outstanding Rieslings.
