Marlborough
Main grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Viognier,
Sub-regions: The Southern Valleys (Omaka, Fairhall, Brancott, Ben Morvan and Waihopai), Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley
Climate: Sunshine is plentiful in Marlborough, however temperatures remain moderate and the strong diurnal variation (large difference between daytime temperature and nighttime temperature). These two factors have a huge impact on the wine, and are the keys to the piercing fruit intensity and strong varietal expression that is so typical of Marlborough.
You should know... Marlborough accounts for an enormous 77% of the total production of New Zealand’s wine, with 20,000 ha of vine. Sauvignon Blanc is undoubtedly king here, particularly since Marlborough is home to some of the World’s best-known (and loved) Sauvignon producers, such as Cloudy Bay.
