Mosel
Main grapes: Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Elbling
Sub-regions: Koblenz, Cochem, Zell, Bernkastel, Piesport, Trier
Climate: The Mosel river runs through a valley between the hills of the Hunsrück and Eifel. On these steep banks – some of the steepest vineyards in the world I might add - the vines are perfectly placed to get their fair share of sunshine, however those that face North are pretty sneaky as they tend to receive up to 10 times more sunlight than those facing South.
You should know... Over 60% of grapes grown in the Mosel is planted are Riesling, so it would be fair to assume that it is the grape variety that characterises the region. Due to the incredibly steep slopes machine harvesting isn’t possible, so handpicking is the name of the game – really it’s no wonder that many of the wines have a price tag to match! The Rhine also has 2 tributaries, the Saar and the Ruwer, and the vineyard areas surrounding each river tend to have their own distinctive personality. In an effort to keep things simple though, suffice it to say they all share 3 dominant characteristics: floral aromas, a pale colour, a light body and a refreshingly fruity acidity.
