Murray-Darling

Main grapes: Chardonnay, Shiraz, Muscat, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon

Climate: Being so far in land Murray-Darling inevitably has a continental type climate; hot, dry and minimal rainfall. There’s so much sunshine the area has actually been nicknamed Sunraysia. The two rivers, Murray and Darling (yes, bingo – that’s where the region gets its name from), are also an essential asset to the region as drought is a widespread issue.

You should know… To properly put Murray-Darling in perspective, I’ll give you the numbers: 1000 wineries, comprised of 25,000 ha of vines, produces ¼ of Australia’s entire wine production, which includes (but is by no means limited to) more than 100,000 tons of Chardonnay. So to summarise: It is just a lot. A lot of everything.
