Nahe
Main grapes: Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder as well as small percentage of Silvaner, Bacchus and Kerner
Sub-regions: Schloss Böckelheim, Bad Kreuznach, Burg Layen and Niederhausen
Climate: Sandwiched between the Rhine and the Mosel valleys, the Nahe is situated in the Hunsrück hills. In this area it is relatively mild however a little frost tends to sneak in from time to time.
You should know... Legal status for the Nahe as an official wine region was only achieved in 1971, so technically as an appellation it’s still relatively young and as such has a lower profile than its neighbours (the Mosel and the Rheingau). Even so, despite being one of the smallest wine regions in Germany, the Nahe has an incredible range of soil types, lending itself to produce diverse wines from few grape varieties. Though only a quarter of what is grown, the Rieslings really stand out here, particularly since there are top quality options for all levels of sweetness.
