New South Wales

Main grapes: Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

Sub-regions: Big Rivers, Canberra District, Cowra, Griffith, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Murray Darling, New England Australia, Orange, Riverina, Shoalhaven Coast, Southern Highlands, Tumbarumba

Climate: The further in land, the hotter the climate. While the elevated vineyards of Hilltops sit at a cool 450m, much of the rest of New South Wales (e.g. Riverina) is hot and dry. That said, Hunter Valley is known for its wet climate, and rainfall here in the summer can be problematic.

You should know… This regions most famous wine is (arguably) the Hunter Valley Semillion, whose unique style has really captured the imagination of the Wine World. These wines are white, dry and are known for developing super toast-y, or even burnt toast, aromas with bottle age. The two largest sub regions are Murray Darling and Riverina, both of which are huge contributors to Australia’s total wine output.
