New Zealand
It seems to me that, as far as countries go, New Zealand really has got it all; beautiful landscape, beautiful weather, beautiful accents, beautiful rugby players – and most importantly, beautiful wine. It’s safe to say they lucked out in pretty much every department.
There are several wine regions in New Zealand, the majority of which enjoy a maritime, cool climate so as a consequence the Kiwi wines are known for the fresh, tangy acidity and seductive citrus aromas – Sauvignon Blanc taking on the role of Prima Ballerina. In the 1980s critics sat up and took notice of New Zealand Sauvignon, as wineries began churning out some serious stuff – particularly Cloudy Bay, who is now considered by many to be the top producer of Sauvignon Blanc in the world. It would be rude of me, however, if I were not to mention that the Kiwis’ talents go far beyond that of just Sauvignon Blanc production – and I’m not talking about their killer hakas (though those are nice too). Both Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs are two other grape varieties that have received much attention and acclaim on the Wine World stage, and sparkling wines are also gaining some serious momentum, many of which are produced in Marlborough.
