North East

Main grapes: Amur

Sub-regions: Changbai Mountain, Liaoning Provinve

Climate: The North East has a distinctly continental climate – cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Siberia’s freezing winds bring down temperatures to at least -10 °C, sometimes even dropping further to -20 °C

You should know… Changbain Mountain grows the indigenous Vitis amurensis (the Amur grape),
which has an insane resistance to the cold – an essential characteristic since it enables the vines to
survive in the severe freezing climate of this area. This grape variety is also very effective in the creation of hybrids, so the Chinese often cross it with European varieties to breed a series of varietals that can cope with the cold. The Liaoning Province, another sub-region, is renowned for its production of China’s icewines.
