Northland

Main grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Chambourcin, Syrah/Shiraz

Famous areas: Bay of Islands, Karikari Peninsula, Kaitaia

Climate: The warm, humid summers and rainy winters are super challenging for growers in Northland, who have to use very careful vineyard techniques to avoid mildew and rot. At the most Northern point of the island, its location and proximity to the sea mean that Northland is almost deemed subtropical.

Important Characteristics: To be perfectly honest, Northland’s contribution to the NZ wine industry is pretty minimal, however the region does hold a huge importance historically. The very first vines to be planted in New Zealand were in Bay of Islands in 1819, which is kind of a big deal really. It’s true that wine production on a large scale is not viable in this region due to the tricky climate, but even so boutique wineries from the area are becoming more and more popular.
