South Australia
Main grapes: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre (also called Marato by the Aussies), Chardonnay, Riesling
Sub-regions: Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island, McLaren Vale, Mount Lofty Ranges, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Flinders Ranges, Wrattonbully
Climate: The south-eastern corner of this region (comprised of the famed Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley and McLaren Vale) has a dramatically cooler climate than the super arid areas further north that are far too hot to even contemplate growing vines. Really the area is too large to speak generally about climate, but one thing that can be guaranteed is heat – particularly in the summer months!
You should know… From east to west South Australia is an enormous 750 miles long, so really it’s little wonder that it has been dubbed ‘the engine room of the Australian wine industry’. However, it certainly isn’t just a case of quantity here since it is also home not only to some of Australia’s most respected wine producers, but some of the most respected wine producers in the world: Penfolds, Henschke, Torbreck and d'Arenberg to name a few.
