Main grapes: Sangiovese

Sub-regions: Chianti, Bolgheri, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Climate: Along Italy’s western coast, this region is comprised of 3 parts; the mountainous Chianti in the North, the hills and valleys to the south and the flat plain along the coast. The Apennine Mountains and the sea lend this region a helping hand since it’s hot climate would otherwise make for some very over-ripe grapes

You should know... The famed Chianti and Chianti Classico (yes, they are 2 separate regions, the latter residing in the middle of the former) are fairly central in Tuscany, primarily producing Sangiovese blends which have often been dubbed ‘Super Tuscans’…and to be honest, if I were to have my pick of the super heroes, I don’t think I’d go far wrong with one of those guys. 
Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are known for producing even fuller bodied wines than the Chiantis, so if you’re not a fan of tannin then I suggest you stay clear from these fruity power-houses!
