Veneto
Main grapes: WHITE: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Garganega, Trebbiano RED: Corvina, Merlot
Sub-regions: Soave, Valpolicella, Prosecco
Climate: Lakes, cities and mountains…it’s all happening. The Alps give this region altitude in the North, but at its Southern most point in Po it’s flat as a pancake. However both North and South have cooling influences due to either altitude of Lake Garda, so grapes don't over-ripen and all remains well in the world.
You should know... One of Italy’s largest wine producing regions (and the home of the city that floats, Venice). To the East is Soave, where the predominant grape is Garganega and wines often do very well with age. In the North-West in Valpolicella where Corvina dominates. Here 2 funky techniques called passito and ripasso are used to extract more colour and flavour from the grapes, in which the grapes are dried before they are fermented…very sneaky indeed.
