Vienna
Main grapes: Grüner Veltliner, Rheinriesling, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Welschriesling, Blauer Zweigelt, Blauer Burgunder, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Sub-regions: Bisamberg, Nussberg, Maurerberg, Laaer Berg (ehem. Georgenberg)
Climate: A fairly standard continental climate; hot summers and moderately cold winters.
You should know... Usually ‘wine production’ in a city is a few token vines for the tourists to ‘ohh’ and ‘ahh’ at, but that’s definitely not the case for Vienna. 612 hectares of cultivated vineyards are a huge part in the preservation of the city’s surrounding green garland of nature. The specialty here is called Weiner Gemischter Satz (Viennese Field Blend) in which white grape varieties are both planted and blended together – it can be quite the concoction, sometimes being comprised of up to 14 varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Weißburgunder, Welschriesling, and Chardonnay with small contributions from Riesling, Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, Sylvaner, Traminer, and Neuburger.
