Wuwei

Main grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Gernischt

Climate: Generally speaking, there is a cool climate here – so late-ripening grapes tend to struggle. However, Wuwei shares the same latitude with Bordeaux, and since it doesn’t suffer from the same unpredictable wet weather, one could argue grapes have a better chance to make it through the growing season unscathed.

You should know…
Wuwei is a sub-region of Gansu and the vineyards are very much concentrated there, however due to issues with transport the wine industry has made little headway. Even so, with a winemaking history dating back to 2000 years ago, perhaps the region will have bright things to come in its future – particularly given that there are now that the vineyard area of this region accounts for 10% of the countries total surface area under vine.
